At Bosch, we live by the mantra “Invented for Life.” If you’re familiar with the brand, you’ve likely heard this tagline before. But, these words are more than just a tagline. They inspire us to deliver appliances that make life simpler for you, Bosch owners. This mission to deliver functional, ergonomic design is reflected in every nook and cranny of our appliances.
As the Director of Industrial Design at Bosch, I see the core principles of “Invented for Life” inspiring our team every day. Innovation isn’t simply conceived out of thin air. In fact, you’ve probably never realized it, but many of our product innovations are inspired by how you live your daily life.
At the beginning of the design process, our design teams go straight to the source (yes, you!) to conduct in-home research and observe how families interact with their kitchens. Through this process, the real life function of daily life informs the design of our appliances. Many of our most innovative solutions are surprisingly simple, yet offer measured improvement to the function of your kitchen.
One of my favorite examples of this concept is the SideOpening Wall Oven, which was inspired by the challenge of consumers leaning over the oven door to remove heavy pans.
The function of a door is one we’re all familiar with. A handle within arm’s reach for pushing or pulling; a hinge that seamlessly opens and closes laterally. The end result of these parts is simple, ergonomic operation.
Before our SideOpening door, the oven was the only place in the home where the door functioned differently – a traditional oven opens from the top down. Seeing the need for a more natural operation, we decided to turn tradition on its side, quite literally. This innovation improves ergonomic operation and helps to make cooking easier and more comfortable.
The concept of function inspiring form to create ergonomic design is an important underlying concept of every Bosch appliance, from obvious design features such as the SideOpening door to more subtle concepts like horizontal oven installation.
If you walked into our Experience and Design in Irvine, the first thing you’d see in the Bosch kitchen is our lineup of wall ovens, installed horizontally. It’s subtle, and you might overlook the setup at first.
Now, think about your kitchen at home, or the kitchen you grew up in. The picture you remember probably includes a stacked appliance setup. Horizontal oven installation is the natural evolution of kitchen ergonomics. The concept is visually appealing, while simultaneously eliminating the need to reach up high or down low while cooking. This allows you to complete kitchen activities from a comfortable, neutral position.
Simple, efficient, functional and ergonomic design. We use these words a lot, and for good reason: making your life easier.
