There’s no predicting when inspiration will strike. Whether you’re enjoying the vibrant colors of the community rose garden or cooking a healthy delicious meal for friends, this spark of creativity is what propels a project from an idea to a reality. For renowned interior designer Christopher Kennedy, the greatest source of inspiration for every new home design project involves the heartbeat of the home – the people inside of it.
This February, I was treated to an inside look at one of Christopher’s latest projects – The Christopher Kennedy Compound: Modernism Week Show House. As the name suggests, the Compound served as the official Show Home of Modernism Week, an annual celebration of midcentury modern design, architecture, art, fashion and culture in Palm Springs, California. The project brought together some of the brightest minds in the design community to create a gorgeous, modern home in a chic desert setting.
Each of the 12 designers brought to life a different portion of the Compound, with Christopher taking on the challenge of transforming the kitchen – which serves as the design centerpiece and conversation hub of any home. I had the chance to sit down with Christopher to discuss what motivated his sleek and sophisticated design choices – including his beautiful usage of Bosch home appliances.
Christopher, like Bosch, believes in functional, streamlined design that is truly customized to each person’s lifestyle. Before tackling the question of color scheme or design aesthetic, he examines the specific needs of the homeowners. For this particular project, creating an efficient, modern kitchen was important to the Palm Springs couple, so Christopher incorporated Bosch custom panel refrigerators and dishwashers to give the space a fresh feel. He complemented these appliances with a horizontal wall and steam oven lineup for functional and ergonomic cooking access.
This kitchen serves as a great reminder of a key tenet of modern design, and one our most important design principles at Bosch, form follows function. Tailoring a space to accommodate your lifestyle and make life simpler is essential to any design project – whether you are remodeling your entire kitchen, or simply making a few design tweaks.
